Do You Really Need GPS on Your Eco Pacific Excursion?

The simple answer to that question is that if there’s a chance you might get lost, then yes, having a GPS on the Eco Pacific excursion is a definite advantage. It’s not as techy as it sounds and there’s no need to go out and get some fancy equipment.

That used to be the case but with car GPS systems, and 3G phone technology, tracking a route and finding your way around has never been easier. The systems available for travellers are handy and compact, and not too expensive either. There are maps and directions which will relate to a specific location and in that sense it can be better to get a GPS set up when you arrive in the region. It will be geared to the locality, in the same way your on board car version at home can probably get you to the local supermarket better than it can get you across a Pacific island.

The Pacific islands are not backwaters and there are the same good communications systems here as there are in most countries. Where the GPS could be useful is if the idea is to head into areas where there are few roads and losing direction could be a problem. Letting someone know your exact position is obviously important, but in this kind of location the GPS system is more likely to be something which you will use to build your route around, not bring in the air sea rescue team!
